Шаман из племени южных пайютов [ Paiute, Southern]. Пророк, создатель культа Пляски духа [ Ghost Dance]. Сын знахаря, после смерти отца воспитывался белым владельцем ранчо Д. Уилсоном [Wilson, David], получил имя Джек и фамилию своего воспитателя [Wilson, Jack]. Вовока утверждал, в 1887-89 видел вещие сны, в которых ему повелели научить свой народ регулярно исполнять ритуальный танец - Пляску Духа, прося Великого Духа [ Great Spirit] вернуться к индейцам. Вовока призывал индейцев отказаться от войн с белыми, возложив все надежды на Духа, который воскресит мертвых индейцев и бизонов, вызовет весной наводнение, которое погубит белых; и тогда индейцы смогут зажить на своей земле в изобилии, без голода, болезней и унижений. Культ Пляски духа широко распространился среди индейских общин Северо-Запада. Многие индейцы считали Вовоку Иисусом Христом. Несмотря на призывы Вовоки сложить оружие, немало индейцев равнин [ Plains Indians], в частности сиу [ Sioux], в 1889-90 продолжали сопротивляться захвату их земель и переселению их в резервации. Сопротивление завершилось бойней у ручья Вундед-Ни [ Wounded Knee Massacre] (1890). -
